Big Ocean: Breaking Barriers in K-Pop

Big Ocean’s first United States tour was an unforgettable tidal wave of music, energy, and acceptance. Here’s a recap of their sold out show in Raleigh, NC.

Big Ocean is a K-pop group composed of three members: Lee Chanyeon, Park Hyun-jin, and Kim Ji-seok.  Chanyeon is the Main Rapper, PJ is the main vocalist, and Ji-seok is the main dancer and maknae of the group. They are the first K-pop group with members who are deaf or hard of hearing. They made their debut on April 20th, 2024. The members use various technologies and techniques. These include sign language, flashing metronomes, and vibrating watches. They use them to create their music and mark their cue during performances. 

Their performance style is theatrical and methodical. Each step and movement is made with intention to convey a meaning invoked with passion through song.


Fans filled the venue. They buzzed with excitement from the post meet and greet high. This high consisted of a group photo and fan sign before the pre-show sound check. Soundcheck was an intimate fan-centered experience. The members introduced themselves and their interpreter. They also warmed up the crowd and tested their mics. They checked and went over the set list for the night’s performance. PADO, the group’s fan name, chanted every lyric like a sing-along. They cheered for their individual performances, including covers from the viral sensation ‘K Pop Demon Hunters’ Soda Pop and Your Idol.

The members shared their gratitude at the performance’s conclusion. They spoke passionately about how much the fans mean to them. Big Ocean’s inaugural U.S. tour captivated audiences with their unique blend of music and inclusivity. The K-pop group, showcased theatrical performances powered by technology. Fans, known as PADO, enthusiastically engaged during the Raleigh show, highlighting deep connections with the group. Their journey is just beginning.
